30 Dec 10 Petteri Koponen Watch: Remember Me? Edition

This Koponen update brought to you by Hippo is inspiring. It makes me want to write a blog entry of my own someday (maybe). First off, The Finnagler has been named Serie A Player of the Week . You can check out some of his recent highlights, along with an awesome generic rock soundtrack, here (apparently Italy does not have embed video technology yet). Then there is this newspaper article which Hippo (he speaks like 70 languages, Finland educates good) summarizes in some main points:- Koponen is "pound for pound" the best player on Reebok Chicago Bears #6 Jay Cutler Realtree camo Jersey
his team. - Koponen has made a huge leap from 2008-09. He has said that he would love to remain with Virtus Bologna in 2010-11 if Virtus participates in Euroleague play. - His contract with Bologna goes until 2013. It would cost the Blazers $500,000 to buy out his contract. - If another Euro club wants to buy out Koponen, and they are interested, they would negotiate a different buy out amount. Now, more from Hippo on Petteri's recent performance:Recent troubles of Portland Trailblazers General Manager Kevin Pritchard haven't been too good news for Blazers prospects playing in Europe such as Joel Freeland, Victor Claver and Petteri Koponen. Pritchard, alongside Mavs' Donnie Nelson, Spurs' RC Buford, and Raptors' Bryan Colangelo has been one of those NBA GMs willing to spend time and money scouting prospects from outside the States and giving proper time to develop in the big leagues of Europe. We all know that American basketball is all about big numbers and individual statistics. When regular Blazers fan take a peek at Petteri Koponen's 12 regular season games in Italian Pro League this season, they see averages of 11.8 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.2 turnovers alongside shooting percentages of 75.7 percent (2pt FGs), 46.5 percent (3pt FGs) and 81.3 percent (FTs) and go: "Meh. Wake me up when he dominates."That is very understandable even from the European point of view. An NBA game is eight minutes longer than a regular game in European league, assists are registered NHL style and if the hands of a team's superstar pivot are inch away from missed shot in the defensive end, he'll be rewarded with a block. In Euroleague, your starting shooting guard can score only four points yet Reebok Dallas Cowboys #82 Jason Witten Realtree camo Jersey
still be mentioned as the best player in the game afterwards.European basketball experts seem to have noticed the same thing this season: Petteri Koponen, despite being a very Americanized offensive player, has adopted the concept of team play, which is vital for star players in European leagues. Just to get idea of the big picture, you can take a look at field goal attempt averages of Virtus Bologna rotation players: David Moss 9.8, Andre Collins 7.8, LeRoy Hurd 7.7, Petteri Koponen 6.6, Dusan Vukcevic 6.4, Diego Fajardo 5.9, Michele Maggioli 5.7, Patricio Prato 4.3, and Viktor Sanikidze 3.7. That's nine guys within six field goal attempts a gamejust imagine your leading guy in the NBA taking only (40-to-48-minutes converted) 11.8 FGAs a game.Petteri Koponen wasn't probably too aware with the situation Kevin Pritchard is in right now, but I guess he has some kind of a sixth sense, because he absolutely dominated the court in Virtus Bologna's away game at league-third Pepsi Caserta. Koponen played 31 minutes and finished with NBA-boxscore worthy 21 points (2pt 4/5, 3pt 2/3, Ft 7/7), 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, 1 block, 2 turnover and 1 personal foul in an ultra-physical 74-67 victory. And even after silencing the notorious Caserta crowd, Koponen calmly reminded the press: "This was once again a proof of our defensive style of play. We got things going early on with our team defense and kept Caserta behind our back all night long. Tonight I made a couple of shots but tomorrow it Reebok Dallas Cowboys #9 Tony Romo Realtree camo Jersey
could once again be someone else. We have so many good offensive players that a guy who scores 20 points one might have two in next week's game and that wouldn't alter the result."Consider this a reminderKoponen is playing well and improving. Koponen won two away games in a row against No. 3 Caserta and No. 4 Avellino, and if they're able to beat No. 14 Ferrara and No. 6 Cantu at home, they will definitely fight for regular season No. 2 spot.-Hippo

29 Dec 10 Cleveland Cavaliers-Chicago Bulls: This One's for Mark, Brad, Larry and Craig

Jonathan Daniel/Getty ImagesAs the NBAplayoff matchups came into focus, most Cavaliers fans were hoping to draw the Chris Bosh-less Toronto Raptors instead of the Chicago Bulls in the first round. But Not this guynoooo way.I've been waiting for this one FAR too long.I realize Michael Jordan is long gone and the current state of the Bulls franchise is a far cry from the Dynasty of the 90s, but the fact remainswe have a score to settle.Nobody knows what the true potential wasfor the late 80s to early 90s Cavs teams for a couple reasons. First, Green Bay Packers jersey
center Brad Daugherty and point guard Mark Price both suffered career-altering injuries that really plagued the team during what should have been their peak. Second, THE GREATEST PLAYER IN NBA HISTORY KEPT BEATING US!The timing really could not have been worse for the Cavs to piece together the best pre-LeBron team in franchise history. As the Boston Celtics "Big Three" began to age and fade, the Cavs assembled theirown big three in Price, Daugherty and standout power forward Larry Nance. After years in the doldrums, suddenly the Cavs were the talk of the town and packing fans into the Richfield Coliseum. Experts projected title runs, Magic Johnson said they would be the "team of the 90s."Jordan's Bulls destroyed all of that, as well as filling the space in my heart normally reserved for joy with devastating disappointment. For those who became Cavalier fans the day LeBron was drafted and are making confused faces right now, let me recount the carnage:In 1988, the Cavs squeaked into the playoffs at 42-40 before losing a first-round playoff series to Chicago three games to two. The following year Cleveland broke out with a franchise-record 57 wins and grabbed the third-seed in the Eastern Conference. It didn't matter as the sixth-seeded Bulls again beat the Cavs three games to two with Game Five forever remembered as "The Shot" game because of Jordan's buzzer beater. In 1992, the Cavs again won 57 games and broke the first-round jinx by defeating the New Jersey Houston Texans jersey
Nets in four games. They went on to knock out Boston in a hard-fought seven game series to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals. For the third time in five seasons, the Bulls were better and sent the Cavs home. The next season would be Lenny Wilkins' last as Cavs head coach. The team again topped the 50-win mark and again lost the the Bulls in the playoffs; this time in a humiliatingsecond-round sweep. Finally, Jordan delivered the knockout blow to the Price-Daugherty-Nance era in 1994 as the Bulls swept the Mike Fratello-coached Cavs out of the first round. For those scoring at home, that's five playoff defeats to Chicago in seven seasons. Yeah, we owe these guys big. Now, the tables have turned. Its Cleveland that boasts the league's best player and record. The Bulls have enjoyed little success since Jordan, but a upset over LeBron would certainly be a giant step forward for the franchise.Which is why the Cavs have to destroy them, preferably in a sweep. If I had it my way, I would have the Cavs wear their late-80s throwback uniforms for every game of this series andbring out Mark Price to sing the Star Spangled Banner for at least two of the games.Lastly, I would make one of the games "Craig Ehlo Night" and present him with the game Indianapolis Colts jersey
ball after the Cavs won. You know, just to make a point.Remember the television show from the 90s called Quantum Leap? In it,Scott Bakula playedDr. Samuel Beckett, who was sent back in time so he could "put right what once went wrong." For this "throwback" series between the Cavs and Bulls, I fully expect Dr. LeBron James to travel back in time for us Cavs fans and indeed put right was once went so horribly wrong.

28 Dec 10 Despite a Fight, Vinny Del Negro Shown the Door

Jonathan Daniel/Getty ImagesChicago Bulls head coach Vinny Del Negro had been rumored to be on his way out of Chicago numerous times throughout his short two-year stint with the team. Now, it's a done deal. Tuesday, Bulls GM Gar Forman announced that the team would relieve Del Negro of Denver Broncos jersey
his coaching duties after back-to-back 41-41 seasons and two first-round playoff oustings. The situation involving the team and their former head coach was one of the oddest soap operas in basketball. First, shortly after the Bulls won the 2008 draft lottery, they hired Del Negro, who had previously had no coaching experience...at all. He was an assistant GM for the Phoenix Suns and also helped on their broadcast team, but had never been on a basketball bench in a suit. Then, after the team selected Derrick Rose with the first overall pick in 2008, Del Negro led a very young team back to the playoffs, where they shocked the world by playing the most competitive first-round series of all time against the reigning NBA champion Boston Celtics. With high hopes for this season, the Bulls got off to a less-than-stellar start. Vinny's name began flying around the rumor mill, especially around Christmastime, the team's historically popular axing period. However, even with Forman allegedly seeking a replacement, Vinny kept his job. Then came the announcement of an altercation after a game on March 30th between Del Negro and VP of Basketball Operations John Paxson. The fight, according to a Yahoo! sports report, centered on the playing time of Joakim Noah, who had recently come off of an injury and had a playing time limit set by team executives. But still, after all of the troubles, the Bulls made the playoffs and even won a game against the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers. However, apparently none of Detroit Lions
his semi-success and praise from his players was good enough for Vinny to keep his job. Even though I've been critical of the hiring since Day One, the positives that he brought to such a young team can't be overlooked.Despite numerous injuries this season, along with a handful of roster changes, the Bulls never gave up and still earned a playoff spot even after it looked like they were closing up shop and looking forward to the offseason. Del Negro helped develop the young talent that's currently on the team, most glaringly with Rose, Noah, and All-Rookie performer Taj Gibson. With the team looking to make a splash this offseason and hopefully move to the next level of the NBA, however, development wasn't weighing heavily on the mind of Forman. Instead, the team will look forGreen Bay Packers jersey
a veteran head coach to try to attract one of the big-name free agents set to sign this summer. Some names that have already been mentioned are Doug Collins, Mo Cheeks, Byron Scott, and even Phil Jackson. Still, with the team facing a lot of uncertainty this offseason with only six roster players set to return next season, one thing is certain: This offseason will be a busy one for the Chicago Bulls.

27 Dec 10 2010 NBA Free Agency and You Don't Care? Think Again Piston Fans.

Well it's almost here, the summer of 2010, the summer of LeBron. The summit is in sight, just remember over every summit is a cliff so pick your steps carefully. This has more followers then the Mayan calendar and the impact is supposed to rival December 21st 2012. If Lebron leaves the end of the world will Reebok Minnesota Vikings #84 Randy Moss Realtree camo Jersey
seem tame for Cleveland sports fans and more then one team hopes to rise from the ashes.Teams have dumped multiple seasons to get ready and it seems like half the players will be free agents. Whole teams will be remade or destroyed, billions of dollars will be spent and way too many bad contracts will be written. The headlines will center around King James, Dwayne Wade and who will the Knicks get while the real stories could be the dozens of second and third tier players who teams refused to sign past 2010 to clear up cap space. With some teams not having enough players under contract to play a game the action will be hot and heavy once the dam breaks. The real winners will be the vendors selling programs and of course new jersey sales. But what if you don't care? What if your team has a maxed out salary cap and no young stars to hang your hopes on?What if you follow the Pistons, Pacers or 76ers?Maybe there is some hope. Maybe we can't dream of LeBron or Wade but that doesn't mean a good GM can't improve his team in this offseason.First off, forget the sign and trade scenarios, the top free agents don't want to play here and if they did by the time you worked up a trade there is nothing left to put with your new toy. With so many teams able to offer max contracts, the top free agents will be looking hard at who their running mates would be and they're not going to play with a bunch of scrubs. So what's left?We could see a lot of trades with teams hoping to make their team more attractive to a Reebok Pittsburg Steelers #83 Heath Miller Realtree camo Jersey
free agent and other teams will be hoping to recover from a free agent loss. What about a Denver or Boston. will they sit back and watch everybody else pick up key players while they don't have the cap room to respond? If you're Pat Riley are you trying to convince Wade to stay and Bosh to sign by saying they can play with Micheal Beasley or would it make more sense to trade Beasley for an established player like Tayshaun Prince? One is a talented young rebounder who is probably three years away from making an impact while the other has been the perfect complimentary player for a NBA championship and the Olympic team. What about the Nets? Are they really telling LeBron that he has the opportunity to play with a Derrick Favors or DeMarcus Cousins? With Manny Harris at the point and Brock Lopez down low why wouldn't they trade that No. 3 pick for a proven scorer?Suppose the Bulls get a headline player, they'll still have a little cap space. You might think just sign another FA but with all the frenzy a lot of those second tier players will be getting way too much money. If they're looking for a player in that 6-10 milliion range they might get more value out of a trade. This is the time for all GMs to take a hard look at their situation. Is your team really good enough to add a piece or two and compete for the championship, or is it time to take a step back and reload?I'm a Pistons' fan so I'll use them as an example but I'm sure you can put in the names you want to see used. This plan works for all the teams sitting out this free agency.I know it's tough if you're Joe Dumars, you cleared all that space then spent it all and you don't have enough to contend. Those young players like Stuckey and Jerebko are only pieces, not answers. What JoeArizona Cardinals jersey
has to do is remember the first time he built a contender and find young, talented players with something to prove. Why not go after a Micheal Beasley or high draft picks? This team needs a serious infusion of top end talent and the Pistons won't get there by waiting for a ping-pong ball to fall the right way. What the Pistons have are a lot of complimentary players, great as third or fourth options but no big threats. Maybe this team can pull it together and compete for a playoff spot next year, but that puts you in NBA purgatory, good enough to make the playoffs but too good to get a shot at a primetime player out of the draft.Doing nothing is not an option, though that's better then pretending they just need another second tier player. Don't trade Prince just to clear up space then use it on Carlos Boozer or Amare Stoudemire. Trade Prince for some young player with some upside. But even if you can pick up a young player or two in a trade don't stop there. Scour these free agents hard. Did some team in its haste to shed cap money allow a young player who hasn't developed yet hit the open market?I'm not talking the big names, I'm thinking more like a Johan Petro or Patrick O'Bryant. Maybe it isn't those exact players but are there any guys in their young 20s that maybe need some playing time or are finally ready to play in the NBA?That's what the Pistons need, a handful of hungry young players. We need the next Billups, Hamilton and Big Ben and with all the movement going on this offseason this is the time to strike. Atlanta Falcons jersey
The action will be frenzied and mistakes will be made, just make sure you are on the right side of that mistake.Championships will be built and franchises will be decimated while a lot of agents get rich. But it's the GMs who do their homework and is realistic about their teams' potential that will win in the end.

26 Dec 10 Ready For a Rematch? NBA Finals Preview: Lakers Vs. Celtics

Stephen Dunn/Getty ImagesThe dream matchup is here. The Los Angeles Lakers will meet the Boston Celtics in a rematch for the Larry O'Brien trophy. Now that we know who will actually battle for the championship, it's time for my official finals prediction. The Lakers and Celtics are two teams that Reebok New England Patriots #12 Tom Brady Realtree camo Jersey
have two completely different styles of play. The Celtics are the more aggressive team that have two three-point sharpshooters in Ray Allen and Paul Pierce, while the Lakers are more of a finesse team that rely on Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, and recently Ron Artest to run their offense. The Celtics rely mainly on their defense to shut down elite teams. This could hurt Los Angeles if the finals becomes a long series.Another concern for the Lakers is Andrew Bynum's torn meniscus. Andrew has said that he would prefer to have surgery after the playoffs but Bynum has become nonexistent in recent games. The one way that the Lakers could beat Boston is to shut down Rajon Rondo. Rondo has been playing like an MVP throughout entire playoffs and is easily the best player still in the playoffs. If Reebok New Orleans Saints #9 Drew Brees Realtree camo Jersey
the Lakers shut Rondo down, that shuts the entire offense down as one of his key abilities throughout the playoffs is his passing.Bottom Line: "The Rematch" will be an even series with two teams essentially offsetting their opponent's styles of play so this series will be decided with defense, not offense.Prediction: Lakers over Celtics in seven games (4-3).(Arguments, opinions, or just want to talk trash? Comment below.)

25 Dec 10 Andre Miller Blasts Blake Griffin: Here's the Problem Tough Guy

Okay so here we go. I on a huge rant tonight about Andre Miller. Not about how consistent a point guard he has been in the league or how he manages games. Not about the timely jumpers he can hit or the pin point passes he can make. Well, if I was him, Id wish that what this rant was about. No, on the other hand I am so confused to why a veteran like himself would disrespect and degrade a young player in his first full season in Blake Griffin. Griffin will most likely dominate in a lot more stat categories than Miller and lead a team to the Finals some day.Yet, Andre Miller, a seasoned vet playing point guard in Portland, tries to be a tough guy. Let be honest, this is Miller last stop before rigamortis sets into his body. Yeah, no joke. And you want to jeopardize your career St. Louis Rams jersey
and games played streak over a stupid act like this? Well granted Griffin can probably make you feel inferior by tea-bagging your ass, but lets get serious shall we, Andre. The suspension is well deserved and hopefully a fine will follow. If you were in the NFL, youd be fined a boat load of money and probably suspended. So enjoy your one game suspension that has made your oh so precious streak of games played non-existent. Trust me, It the least they could do.By Brian Gray - KissTheRim, Jabberhead, Blogger, SJ Contributing Authorhttp://forums.sportsjabber.net/sjforums/showthread.php?t=72483Join in the discussion on this and other topics in the NEW Sports Jabber Forums!

23 Dec 10New Orleans Hornets: Good But Not Great

Ariza has been a great fit in New Orleans.Chris Graythen/Getty ImagesWidely predicted to miss the playoffs, the New Orleans Hornets are one of the biggest surprises of the young NBA season. With a 10-1 record (tied for best in the league) and a +7.4 point differential (the sixth best), Hornets fans have every reason to be excited. The Chris Paul sweepstakes have been canceled for the time being.Leading the league with a 29.06 PER (player efficiency rating, a semi-useful catch-all statistic that tries to encapsulate a player's offensiveBuffalo Bills jersey
value in one number), three points higher than his nearest competitor, Paul is a front-runner for the MVP award. In the team's starting five, the only other player who can create his own shot is power forward David West. But at only 6'9" and with poor lateral mobility, he can be shut down by longer, athletic forwards. The Nuggets' Kenyon Martin frustrated him into shooting 40% over five games in New Orleans' first-round implosion two years ago.The other three starters—Marco Belinelli, Trevor Ariza and Emeka Okafor—all depend on Paul to spoon-feed them open shots, usually off back picks and pick and rolls. Primarily jump-shooters, Belinelli and Ariza are assisted on an astounding 85% and 83% of their shots outside of the paint, while 78% of Okafor's baskets come off of assists.Quick-footed and aggressive, all three earn their keep on their defensive end. Most of the Hornets' success can be attributed to their improvement on that side of the ball, from 21st in defensive rating last season to 3rd this year. There isn't a weak link an offense can really attack in their starting five. Belinelli is one of several 3-point shooters surrounding Paul.Chris Graythen/Getty ImagesThe story changes when they go to their bench. It consists mainly of undersized shoot-first guards Jerryd Bayless and Willie Green (both valuable because of the team's scarcity of shot-creators) and Jason Smith, a jump-shooting seven footer acquired in a trade from Philly. All of their starters average over 30 minutes a game except Belinelli, who checks in at 27.5. New Orleans' lack of depth is one of the reasons they play the third slowest pace in the NBA, despite having one of the great open-court point guards in the game. With a great half-court defense and a scarcity of offensive options, it's to the Hornets advantage to slow the game down to a crawl.New coach Monty Williams has done a great job of creating a style of play that maximizes his team's advantages Carolina Panthers jersey
and minimizes their deficiencies. He's clearly been the Coach of the Year so far.But despite their sterling record, the Hornets have quite a few flaws. The most glaring is their lack of size up front. At 6'10", Okafor is undersized for the center position and doesn't have much lift in his legs to make up for it. In a game against Dallas, a cutting Ariza dished the ball to a wide-open Okafor under the basket. Instead of dunking it, he gently laid the ball into the basket.West is similarly undersized. Smith, their first big off the bench, is an anemic rebounder (he has a 12.2% rebound rate; a typical center is in the 18-23 range) and not much of a shot-blocker.Okafor is a willing shot-blocker, but at 6'10 with limited hops, this desire results in him getting dunked on.Ironically, the answer to their problems is the player they got rid of for Okafor, current Maverick Tyson Chandler. At 7'1" and 235 with springs for legs, his low-post defense and shot-blocking were crucial to New Orleans' run to Game 7 of the second round three years ago. The first play of Chicago Bears jersey
the Mavericks-Hornets game on Wednesday was a perfect illustration of New Orleans' lack of athleticism and size up front: Okafor could only watch helplessly as Chandler soared for a dunk on a perfectly thrown alley-oop pass from Jason Kidd.In the Western Conference, the road to the NBA Finals goes through the two-time defending champion Lakers. There's simply no way the Hornets can handle Los Angeles' height. If they so desire, Gasol, Odom and Bynum can throw passes to each other with impunity, plucking the ball out of the air and shooting it over the heads of New Orleans' under-sized big men.Not being able to beat the Lakers is no mark against a team, and after last year's disaster, a playoff appearance and a possible second-round birth (depending on the match-ups) has to be considered a successful season in New Orleans. But while their surprising start has erased the specter of their franchise player's trade demand, there are still dark clouds looming over the Hornets' long-term prospects. A younger and healthier Paul ventured into the lane far more often.Listed generously at 6'0", Paul has used blinding speed and played with a fierce edge (which he has often walked over—see punching Julius Hodges in the groin during the '05 ACC Tourney) to make himself into one of the league's best players. But after tearing the meniscus in his left knee and missing about half of last season, Paul has been forced to play with a bulky knee brace. It has clearly affected his game. In 2008/2009, 26% of his shots were in the paint. This season only 16% are. He's not nearly as aggressive on offense as he was that season, averaging a full four points less. In two games against the Mavericks' trio of defense-less point guards—Kidd, Terry and Barea—he averaged only 21 points. Compare that with the 39 he dropped on them in the team's first meeting last year and the 24.6 he averaged (which includes games of 32 and 35 points) against them in their first-round series three years ago.The Mavs began crowding Paul, a once unheard of proposition, frustrating him enough that he threw a wild elbow at the pesky Barea to create some space on a drive to the basket. Going forward, Paul's recovery from knee surgery, and his ability to score in the paint, will be an important storyline to track. As for the Hornets, their undersized front-line and reliance on jump-shooting will derail them at some point in the Western Conference Playoffs. NBA Free Agent Rumors: Is Chris Bosh Key To LeBron James Staying in Cleveland?

It is noofficiallysix days into the 2010 NBA Free Agency Frenzy. Some decently big names like Paul Pierce, Rudy Gay, Dirk Notwitzki, and Joe Johnson have all re-signed with their respected team. Whereas the first big name to land somewhere else with a different team was, Amar'e Stoudemire. Minnesota Vikings
Who is about to sign a five year deal worth roughly $100 million, with the New York Knicks. The question is, with all these players re-signing with their current teams, could LeBron be on his way to re-signing with the Cavaliers?Well there have been reports that LeBron and the Cavaliers are not only working on a deal with LeBron, but are working out recruiting Raptors forward, Chris Bosh to come to Cle-Town?Bringing Chris Bosh to Cleveland would give LeBron the supporting tier one player that he has been looking for. With Amar'e off the books, Bosh is the best option for LeBron as a sidekick.Bosh, is a type of player anyways that needs some one to give him the ball down low, he is not a type of big man that can get the ball from about 15-18 feet out and drive to the whole on a consistent basis. So, by having LeBron who will take up numerous defenders at a time, a guy like Bosh will be able to benefit from that, because if LeBron is in trouble he will use hisfacilitatingskills and just find the open Chris Bosh down low for the easy flush.Pairing Bosh and LeBron is the best pairing LeBron can ask for. If you were to pair alongside a Dwayne Wade or Joe Johnson (which can not happen now). You will be asking for disaster. Who is going to have the ball in their hand during crunch time? Who will the offense be ran around? Who is willing to give up three-five points in their point averages? None of them. That is the answer.Having LeBron and Chris Bosh is best scenario for LeBron and Bosh. The Case For LeBron JamesAdding Bosh or Stoudemire would have been the bets pairing LeBron could have gotten. Now, that Amar'e is off the market, Bosh is your best option left. LeBron needs the ball in his hands all the time. Having another similar New England Patriots jersey
player like Dwayne Wade on the team, is not benefiting either player. LeBron always wanted another top tier player to play alongside him, well now is his chance tocapitalizewith Bosh. The Case For Chris BoshThis is the bestpossiblescenarioChris Bosh can ask for. By going to the Cavaliers the Cavs would now be championship contenders, hands down. Bosh says he wants out of Toronto and go to a team where he has a chance to win. Well, Cleveland and LeBron James is the best option. Bosh is a type of player that has to have another top player around him like a LeBron or a Wade. If you think I am lying, think about it. If Bosh is to sign outright with any other team. Say the Heat right now without Dwayne Wade. Are the Heat not just the same team as the Raptors were with Bosh...? Exactly. Besides, Bosh will still get his 20 and 10 a night in Cleveland. With Bosh going to Cleveland it will benefit LeBron, Bosh and the Cleveland Cavaliers. How This Will Happen? The one way for this deal to potentially happen a sign-and-trade would have to be done, since the Cavaliers are only six million under the cap-space as it stands. The teams could potentially discuss a sign-and-trade. The sign-and-trade deal the Cavaliers since they do New Orleans Saints jersey
not have that much to offer, could package in the expiring contract of Antawn Jamison and All-Star point guard Mo Williams along with Danny Green (who's salary is notguaranteedfor next year). For Chris Bos h and Colangelo would probably package in the salary of either Hedo Turkoglu or Jose Calderon or Jarret Jack .Yes, by doing this trade, it will be the start of a re-building process for the Toronto Raptors. Sorry Raptor fans.

Cliff Lee: Did a Few Foolish Fans Cost the Yankees in the 2010 MLB Offseason?

Ronald Martinez/Getty ImagesFor anyone with any interest in professional baseball, the past few weeks have been very interesting. We've all watched, sometimes a bit puzzled, as Cliff Lee's agent Darek Braunecker turned the winter meetings in Orlando into his own personal three-ring circus. We've all waited with bated breath to find out... San Francisco 49ers jersey
where will he sign? Will it be New York? Will it be back to Texas? Who are the "mystery suitors"? Washington can't be a real option, can it?At first, his refusal to take offers, first and most notably from the Yankees, turned some heads. Then, when the Rangers essentially offered him a blank check and he basically sent it back, well that certainly at least got my attention. Not only was he now turning away offers of money, he was turning away offers of money that went something like "give us a figure that's less than $200 mil and we'll see what we can do" from actual billionaires! We all continued to watch, keeping an eye on twitter feeds, ESPN updates, and breaking news bulletins, sure the next one would be the news of Cliff Lee heading to New York.As we watched these programs we heard (the same as I'm sure Lee heard) that "everyone" was waiting on Lee to sign, then the rest of the dominoes would fall. We heard how the Yankees' Plan B would be Carl Crawford, or how Greinke's availability hinged on Lee's new landing spot. We heard about how team's entire plans were built around Lee's decision, and how they'd wait to make another move until they heard from him.Who is the best team in the league?Who is the best team in the league?Philly43.9%New York Yankees12.2%Boston Red Sox26.8%Texas Rangers2.4%SF Giants9.8%Another team4.9%Total votes: 41One of these teams was the Yankees, especially as time passed. You see, the thing about waiting, well, it's not one of our favorite activities as humans.Eventually people got tired of Seattle Seahawks jersey
waiting. New York's "Plan B" saw Jayson Werth's contract with Washington, saw dollar bill signs, and inked his own massive deal with the Yankees' long-time rival, giving the Red Sox the rare opportunity to beat the Yankees during the off-season.Other premium free agents began signing elsewhere as well; Dunn to the White Sox along with Konerko heading back there, or V-Mart to Detroit. When the dust settled there were only three free agents that were really worth talking about; Lee, RP Rafael Soriano, and 3B Adrian Beltre with the Yankees considered the front-runners to land Lee.Only a few days after there were really no other options available for the Yankees, no "Plan B" waiting in the wings, only then did Lee "decide" NY wasn't the place for him. In a move that so completely ruined the Yankees' off-season (normally the time of the year they shine) it seemed like it could only have been dreamed up by a Red Sox fan, Lee agreed to terms with the team he dominated the Yankees in the World Series with...the Phillies. The move worked so well it could only have been born of spite...right? Like the spite of a lifelong Sox fan? Or maybe the spite earned when another man spits on your wife? I don't know, but I do know two things:1) You know what they say about a woman scorned.2) Lee is from Arkansas, a ways from Red Sox nation.Lee joins "the Roys" (Oswalt and Halladay) as well as young pitcher Cole Hamels to form what is certainly the best rotation in baseball today, and perhaps the best of all time. The Phillies, normally considered St. Louis Rams jersey
favorites to contend for the NL crown, are almost certainly now favorites to win the whole thing this season, and for many more to come (at least five, which is what Lee's deal is rumored to be for in years, despite a six- to seven-year offer from NY).

20 Dec 10 Cincinnati Bengals: Where Do Chad Ochocinco And The Bengals Go From Here?

Matthew Stockman/Getty ImagesWell, if Reebok New England Patriots #12 Tom Brady Realtree camo Jersey
you watched the game on Monday, I bet there was some questions or comments going through your head. It was ainterestinggame.First of all, Chad Ochocinco only had one catch in the game—and then Terrell Owens had 10catcheswith two touchdown along with that. So, I bet you're saying this is the beginning of something bad for the Cincinnati Bengals. But, to me, it was a different night, different game.Terrell Owens wasn't getting double-coverage and Chad Ochocinco was, so how is Chad going get open if the Pittsburgh Steelers are double-covering him?To me, Chad is very talented, but it is hard to get open if there is double-coverage. Mr. Ochocinco was pretty frustrated after the high ball, talking to Carson Palmer. Then, the very next play, he was still talking about Reebok New Orleans Saints #9 Drew Brees Realtree camo Jersey
it, slamming the ball down and getting benched, too.Well, where do they go from here?Do they just stop?Well, their playoff chances are slim, and real slim with a 2-6 record. With hardmatchupsahead, they have to keep pushing.Chad has to sit down and relax and start fresh. I understand that they're 2-6 and they had high thoughts about their Super Bowl chances. They have talent on their team, but their chemistryis just not there. So, do they stop? No, keep pushing.No. 85, No. 9 and head coach staying or going?Well, with this being theReebok New York Giants #27 Brandon Jacobs Realtree camo Jersey
last year of Chad Ochocinco, Marvin Lewis and Terrell Owens' contracts, and people wondering if Carson Palmer is worth the money and if the Bengals might get a quarterback in the draft, are they going to start off fresh?I think they need to stay with each other. So, overall, they all just need to stay on the team and work things out.TerrellOwens still has has in the tank, so they just have to get thechemistrytogether. What do you guys think?Follow me on twitter at: lilben85.

19 Dec 10 Michael Vick: Is He an Elite Quarterback After His 2010 Eagles NFL Season?

Chris McGrath/Getty ImagesHe entered the league in 2001 as the most physically gifted and highly anticipated quarterback in ages. In his seven seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, he was a human highlight reel who could take over the game one minute, and then lose it the next with inconsistent passing. Falcon'sReebok Pittsburgh Steelers James Harrison Realtree camo Jersey
fans lamented the lack of effort he put into learning the finer points of quarterbacking. Then, in 2007, he was jailed for running an illegal dog-fighting ring. It seemed his career was over. Then last season a new third-string quarterback appeared in the Philadelphia Eagles roster. His name, as we all should know, was Michael Vick. Now, after taking over from Kevin Kolb after his concussion against the Green Bay Packers, Vick has been out-of-this-world good. He leads the NFL with a quarterback rating of 105.3, has passed for seven TDs to no interceptions, has completed 60.8 percent of his passes for 203.4 yards per game. He has also rushed for 261 yards for two TDs. And these stats are excluding his Week 10 beat down of the Washington Redskins. Now, finally, Michael Vick is realising his potential, but the question is whether he can be labelled an elite quarterback or not. With any luck, I will answer that right now (in my opinion of course).I believe the criteria necessary to determine if a quarterback is elite or not is if they have good statistical output, play well, win gamesandget it done in the crunch situations.Jim McIsaac/Getty ImagesStatistical Output and Play I dealt with Vick's statistical prowess earlier, but no one would doubt that it is certainly enough to be elite. After nearly 10 years, Vick has finallybegun to play as a quality quarterback, not just a quality runner. After years of completing about 50 percent of his passes, andhad a quarterback rating floating at about 75, Vick has become a complete quarterback. Most importantly, he no longer bolts from the pocket as soon as pressure gets near him. He now goes through his progressions and even when he breaks from the pocket, he keeps his eyes down field.Vick also has improved his accuracy, especially with the deep ball. This, combined with the speedy receivers at Philly and his phenomenal arm strength, has created lots and lots of long passing plays for the Eagles.Although he has slowed a bit since he entered the league, Vick is still one of the fastest players in the league, and certainly the fastest at quarterback. Hepicksupfirst downs and extends plays as well Ben Roethlisberger, and the threat of him taking off on bootleg plays opens up bigger holes for the Philadelphia running backs.Vick is also developing a better understanding for play calling, although he still makes very few adjustments at the line of scrimmage. This is the area where he could improve dramatically, although it can be argued that his physical Reebok San Francisco 49ers #21 Frank GORE Realtree camo Jersey
abilities make that unnecessary.Who is the best young quarterback?Who is the best young quarterback?Matt Ryan36.6%Joe Flacco4.9%Matthew Stafford7.3%Josh Freeman9.8%Mark Sanchez12.2%Sam Bradford19.5%Colt McCoy9.8%Total votes: 41Crunch-Time PerformanceI still do not think that Vick has quite mastered this yet. It is true that he makes important downs with his legs, but when the game is on the line, he struggles passing when the defense knows whats coming. He needs to improve his short range accuracy and awareness to be better passing for third downs. However, we all know that he can make a big play at any time, like his 40-yard overtime run for Atlanta in the playoffs.WinningVick was not great at this at Atlanta, partly because oppositionsthe runwas coming, and Vick could not beat them through the air. This season though, Vick has compiled a 4-0 record (not including the first Washington game that Kolb finished or the Packers game which Vick almost saved).I still have doubts about his ability to win in the dying stages, when he is forced to pass much more and become one-dimensional. However, the potency of the Eagles offense has kept Vick out of those situations so far.ConclusionAlthough Vick is not yet a polished passer, and does not have the ability to improvise at the line of scrimmage like the Manning brothers and Tom Brady, his other unique abilities more than make up for these faults. He also is yet to lose a game he has played for the full Reebok Washington Redskins #98 ORAKPO Realtree camo Jersey
60 minutes. Therefore, Michael Vick is in my mind the newest elite quarterback in the NFL, and will be the hottest free agent next year if the Eagles do not sign him to a long-term deal this season. But hell would freeze over before they allowed him off their roster.

18 Dec 10 Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Advice: Who to Pick Up in Week 11

Andrew Burton/Getty ImagesCan you believe it’s already Week 11 of the fantasy football season? It seems just like yesterday we were getting you prepared for the upcoming year and now here we are, already past the bye week point of the season and heading down the final stretch. Now that the two month ritual of shuffling fantasy football lineups and rosters due to bye weeks is over it’s time to fill your roster with lasting talent that has some upside. You know, the type of player that can help propel your team to the Reebok Minnesota Vikings #84 Randy Moss Realtree camo Jersey

Just take a quick look at our list of recommended quarterbacks this week and you will know what we mean. For those of you looking to pickup the likes of Troy Smith, Mike Goodson, and David Garrard you won’t find them on this weeks list because we already recommended them to our fan base in last weeks Pick Them Up article.Shaun Hill (Detroit Lions)Hill went 29-for-50 for 323 yards with one touchdown and one interception in Week 10 against the Buffalo Bills as he returned to the starting lineup in place of Matt Stafford (right shoulder).Who will make the best waiver wire pick up in Week 11?Who will make the best waiver wire pick up in Week 11?Shaun Hill (DET)31.3%Chester Taylor (CHI)7.8%Shonn Greene (NYJ)29.1%Mike Thomas (JAC)31.8%Total votes: 179Hill, himself, suffered a broken left forearm a few weeks back, but now looks healthy and will likely be the Lions’ starting quarterback for the foreseeable future. In the five full games he has played in this season, Hill has thrown for 225 or more yards in every game and has at least 14 fantasy points in four of the five contests. He Reebok Pittsburg Steelers #83 Heath Miller Realtree camo Jersey
is available in a lot of leagues (78 percent availability in Yahoo! leagues), and if you are a Stafford owner Hill is definitely worth adding.Chester Taylor (Chicago Bears)After having just one double-digit carry game prior to the Bears’ Week 8 bye, Taylor has 10-plus carries in each of the past two game. A few weeks ago the Bears said they wanted to get Taylor involved and they have made good on it’s promise. His backfield mate, Matt Forte, only has one 100-yard game this season and has not scored since Week 6. This should lead Taylor seeing an increase in touches going forward,. After all, Chicago didn't sign Taylor to a massive free-agent contract to let him ride the pine on a consistent basisThe Bears have also professed a desire to use Taylor as their goal line back, Reebok Arizona Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald Realtree camo Jersey

17 Dec 10 Peyton Manning and Colts Foiled by Tom Brady and Randy Moss (Satire)

Look at those flowing locks...Harry How/Getty ImagesSATIRE ; In the hotly anticipated battle royale between the always lovable Peyton Manning and the always beautiful Tom Brady, an unlikely hero rose to the top. This man, driven by the kind of passion and diligence that is only embodied by those who truly desire victory above all else, stood tall and proud and said, "Don't worry everyone; I got this." He then, in a moment sure to be remembered forever by the true fans amongst us, legally changed his name to "Ben Green." English Reebok Minnesota Vikings #4 Brett Favre Realtree camo Jersey
professors around the world rejoiced in the gesture, some brought near to tears, as Mr. Green celebrated the long-awaited change by rushing for 96 yards in the New England Patriots' nail-biting victory over the Indianapolis Colts by a score of 31-28. Branning Bowl 2010 is sure to be thought of as one of the bettermatch-upsbetween these two future Hall of Fame inductees, especially for the heart-rending Brady, who looked ready to step into an HerbalEssencescommercial, hair flitting about magnificently in the stiff breeze, as he took his first few snaps. Despite only throwing for 186 yards, Brady looked very sharp, grabbing two touchdown passes, a 123.1 passer rating and according to early estimates, at least fourendorsement deals and one cameo appearance in the upcoming Hangover sequel ("man at pool.") Manning, meanwhile, looked only OK, amassing four touchdowns and 396 yards, but also a rather paltry 96.3 passer rating and an uncharacteristic three interceptions, including one by the always entertaining Randy Moss, who, as expected, made an appearance late in the fourth quarter as the clock was winding down. Bill BelichickReebok Minnesota Vikings #69 Jared Allen Realtree camo Jersey
shockingly seemed to smile on several occasions yesterday as the game drew to a close and some have speculated that he may even be ready to release most of the rest of the hostages, confident that his team iscapable of winning without "proper motivation." This is wonderful news for the NFL mediators, some of whom were remembered before yesterday's game by a moment of silence, for tragically and heroically surrendering their lives in the valiant effort to make Belichick feel emotion. Also having a good game yesterday was the former Keebler Elf and current professional running back, Danny Woodhead. This man, who is youngerthan me and has one of the more hilarious last names in sports, rushed for 69 yards and scored one of the more exciting and weaving third quarter touchdowns before donning a red cape and running around the stadium pretending to fly. It was a magical display of youthful exuberance, and it melted the hearts of fans everywhere. Even Belichick gave Woodhead a gentle tap on the shoulder before having him escorted off the field by the team trainer, Tony "The Wrench" Castillano, for "examination." NOTES:Tom Brady is now tied for first all-time in consecutive home victories, matching the usually-naked Zombie Favre at 25. He will have a chance to take sole possession of first place on Monday Night Football, December 6th, against the Jets. Also, Wes Welker, who continues to have his internal circuits worked on by NASA scientists, powered himself to five receptions, 58 yards and one touchdown. I am excited to see what he is capable of when the review and repairs are complete and he is once again at full capacity. The Patriots will square off against the Lions in the annual "Turkey Bowl" this coming Thursday. This is a very special day, played every year in the semi-habitable city of Detroit, in which the Lions pretend to play something resembling football while another team stomps all over them like a small pack of ants that gotseparatedfrom the Reebok New England Patriots #12 Tom Brady Realtree camo Jersey
colony and were frozen in liquid hydrogen. It will be fun to drift in and out of consciousness during this game, a stomach full of food, while my family members consider whether or not to call for an ambulance. I can only hope the Patriots have firmly secured a lead before they start CPR, as it will surely impede my view of the television. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

New England Patriots Bear Similarities To Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints

Jim Rogash/Getty ImagesThe New Orleans Saints marched into Super Bowl XLIV, and the New England Patriots' 60-minute men look poised to do the same thing in 2010. In fact, the similarities between the two are eerie, to say the least. No, the Patriots didn't have much of 4 Brett Favre White jersey
a chance at perfection. That was shattered in Week 2 at the hands of the New York Jets. Their defense isn't striking fear in the heart of anyone, but maybe it doesn't have to. It sure didn't with the Saints, who forfeited an average of 21 points per game. The Patriots defense gives up 24 points per game. Much like with the Saints last year, the pundits agree that the Patriots are the team to beat at this point in the season. But how are they doing it? The Patriots feature a defense that could generously be called "opportunistic," with the ability to force turnovers at key points in the game. It currently sits at plus-11 in the turnover margin (the same mark the Saints finished with in 2009), and ranks second in the league in that category. Its 15 interceptions rank eighth in the league, and it is on pace for 22, just four short of the total which New Orleans finished with last year. The Patriots' complementary running backs could have something to do with it. The Saints had Reggie Bush, their pass-catcher and quickster out of Jets 6 Sanchez AFL50th jersey
the backfield; they had Pierre Thomas, their hammer up the middle; they had Mike Bell, their jack-of-all-trades who could often be seen leaping over piles into the end zone. The Patriots have two talented backs in BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead, both of whom excel in their own rights. Green-Ellis is best between the tackles and Woodhead is best in open space. They have explosive potential, but the Patriots get by with them simply doing their jobs. The Patriots feature a who's-who of some of the most underrated receivers in the game right now. Wes Welker, Brandon Tate and Deion Branch aren't 6-foot-somethings that impose their will on opposing defensive backs like New Orleans. Just like the running backs, though, these guys are okay with just doing their jobs to the utmost of their ability. Perhaps most importantly, both the 2009 Saints and the 2010 Patriots feature the No. 1 scoring offenses in the league, led by their uber-talented quarterbacks. Ah, there's the rub. In what's become a 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
quarterback-driven league, the Patriots are proving that you can make up for deficiencies across the board with a great quarterback. And as for that old adage that "defense wins championships"? The Saints were ranked No. 1 in scoring offense in 2009; the Patriots currently enjoy that same ranking. In that respect, we've seen a change of the guard in the NFL. But as it did in the previous decade, the logo on that guard may still be a "Flying Elvis".

Oakland Raiders Are an Object Lesson for Some College Students, So Please Win!

Reverse the trend and win the game on Dec. 5, 2010.The game is a test! Two teams are the center of my love for sports: the Oakland Raiders and the college team, Texas Southern University (TSU)Tigers. Both teams were struggling in 2007.
Some subjects are considered tough. Mathematics is one ofnfl jerseys
those subjects. Since 2007, a Texas professor has been designing lessons using NFL data and some college football data to illustrate the power and utility of mathematics in the real world.
In 2008, both targeted teams struggled. Again, in 2009, both teams struggled.
In 2010, the future looked very bright for the Oakland Raiders. Even the media saw a difference in the way the new players were selected. Things were looking up.
Suddenly the researcher who is a two-year college professor saw an opportunity to teach an object lesson. The lesson was that a man can change, a team can change and students can change.
On the one hand, Texas Southern University looked like they were headed to a championship. That's right, and they are on their way in just a few more days. A college team did change. It's been 42 years since TSU has come close to a championship.
Something happened to the beloved NFL team, the Oakland Raiders. Suddenly the pattern of losses returned, and it was difficult to explain to the students. After all, the object lesson was that a team can change and go from losing to winning in a consistent pattern.
It looked like the pattern was deterministic, but lately it seems more like "chaos."
The data does not lie. The discussions are becoming more complicated. The team that showed so much potential and promise is slipping back to its old ways, losing back-to-back games rather than having back-to-back wins.
How does the professor face those students, most of whom rather cheer for a Texas team in the first place?
Today, one of the students who loves the Oakland Raiders proudly wore his Raider gear. He hopes for a victory on Sunday, Dec. 5. Sometimes this young man comes to class with a skateboard, his black and silver and a good attitude. He let the professor know that he is concerned about Sunday. He is uncertain, and he has looked at the data to try to conjecture what will be the outcome.
From a mathematic point of football jerseys
view, there is noise, or perturbation, in the Oakland Raiders' system. Where is the noise or vibration (or error) coming from? Were the activities and conversations of bye week so powerful that they dismantled an aggressive hard-hitting team of Oakland Raiders?
Now, what does the professor tell the students about determination, persistence and getting ready for the final exam? A parallel would be to ask what are the coaches telling the Oakland Raiders on this day to reverse the trend of the past two games? The Oakland Raiders must not fail the "final exam."
Maybe if this team knew how many young people were encouraged and became hopeful after watching those three consecutive wins, they (the Oakland Raiders) will refuse to be defeated.
Sometimes when you fight a battle for others, you become more fierce and determined to have a victory.
Oakland Raiders, fight hard to win. Do it for some young people who have been learning to study the patterns and trends of the team's performance since 1960.
Finally, the object lesson during the fall semester will be so much more effective if you, the Oakland Raiders, upset the media and the onlookers. Show the young people that a team can change.
Show young people that preparation, nfl throwback jerseys
persistence and a powerful focus on winning can indeed make a difference in academics and sports, even in professional sports.
Go Oakland Raiders! Do not fail the "final exam."

Colts Vs Titans Thursday Night Football: Live Reaction To Game's Biggest Stories

Twenty-five seasons have passed since the Steelers last won a Super Bowl

Twenty-five seasons have passed since the Steelers last won a Super Bowl, and a new generation hungers for a championship of its own in Pittsburgh. After coming close so often over the past decade, the president of the franchise believes it's time to add another Vince Lombardi trophy to the club's aging quartet."I think for the people who have been around for awhile now, I think we all feel like it's time," Art Rooney says. "We've been close and we have to take that last step."The Steelers were the surprise of the NFL last season when, behind a rookie quarterback, they became the first team from the AFC to go 15-1. But they also became only the second 15-1 NFL team not to reach the Super Bowl when they lost the AFC Championship game at home for the fourth 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
time in 11 years.Nothing less than a Super Bowl will be good enough this season, even though they suffered losses in free agency. Coach Bill Cowher worries that it will be difficult to match last year's determination by a team embarrassed with its 6-10 record in 2003."Going into this season there will be talk of this football team being one of the preseason favorites," Cowher says. "Those are the things you have to fight. Complacency can create a lot of disappointment if you are not careful. I think that is the challenge we have."QuarterbacksNo rookie quarterback ever produced a better record in one season than Ben Roethlisberger did when he started 13 games and won them all in the regular season. He broke Dan Marino's 21-year-old rookie records for pass completion percentage and passer rating. He earned AFC Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, and his No. 7 jersey was the league's hottest seller.Great. Now, can he do it again or will the sophomore jinx bite him? His performance fell off badly in two playoff games, but his coaches may put even more on his shoulders this season, something Roethlisberger wants."I think it would be great if we can open up the offense a little more," he says.Tommy Maddox, who opened the door for Roethlisberger when he was hurt in the second game last season, is more than capable as the backup. Maddox has shown he can guide an offense into the playoffs and is willing to work with the young phenom. Charlie Batch will compete with Brian St. Pierre for No. 3.Running BacksThe Steelers should be strong in the backfield provided Jerome Bettis and Duce Staley hold up. Bettis, 33, considered retirement, but after leading the team with 941 yards rushing he decided in the spring to give it one more try to reach his first Super Bowl.Staley will open the season again as the starter. He was on his way to his best season with 707 yards after seven games before a hamstring injury held him to just 41 carries the rest of the regular season. Provided he stays healthy, Staley will get the bulk of the carries and Bettis will be used at the goal line. "My job is backing Duce up," Bettis says. "If he goes down, I have to be ready to go. You have to prepare yourself every season as if you'll take all the carries."Two other capable backs wait in the wings. Verron Haynes plays on third downs but has been limited by injuries in his career. Speedy Willie Parker gained 102 yards at Buffalo and has the look of 36 Bettis White Jersey
a future star. Dan Kreider is one of the better blocking fullbacks in the
Colts jersey
league.ReceiversThe Plaxico Burress Era ended when the enigmatic wideout departed for the Giants in free agency. Antwaan Randle El and free-agent pickup Cedrick Wilson will get a chance to replace Burress. One of them will play in the slot.Wilson was the team's only real free agent signing after he spent his four previous seasons in relative obscurity in San Francisco. The Steelers believe they have a player on the rise.Randle El or Wilson will present smaller targets for Roethlisberger, but they will be faster ones and, they hope, more dependable than Burress. Among the most dependable in the league at flanker is Hines Ward, a four-time Pro Bowler who could finish as the Steelers' leading receiver of all time. His 80 receptions for 1,004 yards came on a team that ran the ball over 60 percent of the time. The Steelers have not been strong at tight end since Mark Bruener's heyday, but that could change since they drafted Virginia's 6-foot-5, 256-pound Heath Miller in the first round.Offensive LinemenA team that loses two starters on the line and adds none can be headed for trouble. But the loss of right tackle Oliver Ross and right guard Keydrick Vincent has not bothered the Steelers, except for their loss of depth. For one, Kendall Simmons returns at right guard after a torn ACL in training camp ended his 2004 season before it began. He started his first two seasons before the injury. Max Starks, a third-round draft choice last year, moves in at right tackle. He's the team's biggest player at 6-foot-7, 337 and performed well as an extra tackle in short-yardage as a rookie.Guard Alan Faneca and center Jeff Hartings both were first-team All-Pro, and left tackle Marvel Smith made his first Pro Bowl. The Steelers' depth is not strong. Chukky Okobi is a good backup center, and Barrett Brooks is a veteran who can play guard or tackle on either side.Defensive LinemenThe Steelers may have the best defensive line in the NFL -- for a 3-4 team. It's a big reason they were No. 1 against the rush and it's also the deepest area on their team. Two out of three are Pro Bowlers: Left end Aaron Smith made it last year and nosetackle Casey Hampton made it in 2003. Hampton missed the final 10 games (and the playoffs) of the '04 season with a knee injury but will return to start. Chris Hoke stepped in for Hampton in the second half of the season and proved more than capable.Right end Kimo von Oelhoffen shows no signs of slowing down at 34, and if he does, backup ends Travis Kirschke and Brett Keisel are regarded highly by the coaching staff. LinebackersTwo of the four starters made the Pro Bowl last season, team MVP James Farrior and Joey Porter. Larry Foote played so well next to Farrior that the team let Kendrell Bell walk as a free agent, re-signed Foote and gave the job to him. Clark Haggans returns as the starter on the outside opposite Porter. But there's not much depth. Clint Kriewaldt serves as the No. 1 backup inside, and James Harrison grabbed the top backup job on the outside away from Alonzo Jackson. The No. 2 pick in 2003, Jackson has been a disappointment, and his roster spot will be on the line this year. The Steelers hoped he could provide relief for Haggans and Porter on the pass rush because those two play every down.Defensive BacksThe Steelers would like to upgrade a secondary they changed radically last season. They hope second-year corner Ricardo Colclough can challenge Willie Williams, 34, for the starting job. Williams took over for an injured Chad Scott at midseason and played so well Scott was released. Deshea Townsend, 30, returns on the right side with Ike Taylor behind him. Troy Polamalu proved to be a delight in his first year as the starting strong safety, and his strong season was rewarded with an invitation to the Pro Bowl. Chris Hope gave the team more speed at free safety but his coaches wish he also made more big plays and interceptions.SpecialistsWith punter Chris Gardocki and kicker Jeff Reed, the Steelers are in good hands with their feet. Reed signed a long-term contract and enters the 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
season with a string of 17 successful field goal tries, two short of Gary Anderson's team record. He has a strong, accurate leg. Gardocki has been dependable with an NFL-record 1,045 punts without a block over 14 seasons. Final AnalysisTheir losses in free agency and their rough schedule will preclude the Steelers from matching last season's 15-1 record. Teams just don't lose 40 percent of their offensive line, a dynamic receiver and a player such as Bell and find improvement. Yet, they have capable replacements and, instead of a sophomore jinx, perhaps Roethlisberger will perform better than he did as a rookie. Their passing game was efficient, and if they successfully open it up, the whole offense should improve.

San Francisco 49ers Alex Smith

The San Francisco 49ers ended their season on a positive note this past Sunday against the Houston Texans, as rookie quarterback Alex Smith gave himself a tremendous confidence booster in the final game. With 18 seconds left in the first half, on a third-and-5 from the Houston 14-yard line, Smith rolled to his right and spotted Brandon Lloyd in the corner of the end zone. The play helped the 49ers end their year on a positive note with a win, and should give Smith some momentum heading into the off season. Smith apparently saved the best for 6 Sanchez Purple AFL50th jersey
last as he had his finest game of the season. The throw to Lloyd was the very first touchdown pass of his career. This time last year Smith was heading into his final game with the Utah Utes in the Fiesta Bowl. In that game he showed many that he was a great quarterback with a lot of abilities. The 49ers believed he was talented as well, as they took him No.1 overall. Even though he had a lot of promise in his final year at Utah, he still was depicted as a system quarterback who benefited from Urban Meyer's innovative offense. Once he started his rookie season with San Francisco Smith found it hard to adjust to the pro game. In his rookie season he was shuffled around more than a jack in a deck of cards, due to his inconsistent play, and the team's inability to protect quarterbacks. Smith headed into the preseason as the starter, then was held back a while to give Tim Rattay the starting job. Then once Rattay didn't work out, they decided that it was time for Smith to go in and take his lumps. Smith endured the lumps and then some, as he threw 11 interceptions in nine games played and suffered the fate of being a young quarterback on a team with a very bad offensive line. In 2005 Smith was sacked 29 times and faced tremendous amounts of pressure as a result of that struggling offensive line. The pressure at times was too much for Smith to take as he made mistakes and didn't break 100 yards passing in a game until December 4th against the Cardinals. Smith did have a tough rookie year, and must improve when his sophomore season with the 49ers begins in August. The Niners passing game finished dead last in the NFL after their 16 game schedule in 2005, which indicates the necessity for improvement from their No.1 draft pick. Smith didn't play up to expectations, but he shouldn't take the entire load of blame head on. The offensive line and other components of the offense need to do a better job protecting the signal caller. Without that protection no quarterback 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
could survive, not even Joe Montana or Steve Young. The role of the quarterback in the San Francisco offense has to change quickly, which means the weight on Smith's shoulders is tremendous. He has to elevate his game, and should train in this offseason to be better prepared to endure the tests of the NFL schedule. San Francisco has a long way to go, but ending the year on a positive note should give Smith and the 49ers faithful a silver lining on this disappointing season.

San Francisco 49ers "Running Backs depth lacking"

If there's one area offensively where the San Francisco 49ers seem to be set, it's at the running back position. The Niners were ranked sixth in the NFL in rushing last season, netting 135.8 yards per game on the ground. Furthermore, starting tailback Frank Gore set a new franchise record Steelers 43 Polamalu jersey
and led the NFC with 1,695 yards in 2006, averaging 105.9 a game and 5.4 per carry in the process. Clearly, then, San Francisco fans have no cause for concern when it comes to the running game, right?Well, with his performance last season, Gore emerged as one of the league's top tailbacks. In his second year in the league, the former Miami Hurricane proved that trading Kevan Barlow before last season was the right move to make. He ran for 87 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the 49ers' season-opening loss to Arizona and followed that up with the first of nine 100-plus-yard efforts, gaining 127 in a Week 2 victory over the Rams. In addition, Gore finished the season with 2,180 yards from scrimmage and led the team with 61 receptions, establishing himself not only as an exceptional runner but as a solid all-purpose threat, too.It is behind Gore that things start to look a little dicey. To say that the Niners lack depth at running back is an understatement. Behind Gore and quarterback Alex Smith, the team's third-leading rusher from 2006 was rookie Michael Robinson, a converted QB out of Penn State. Robinson is a tremendous athlete and has potential, as illustrated by his two-touchdown performance against the Eagles last September; however, he had just 38 carries as a rookie and remains both unproven and untested. The problem for the Niners is, Gore has dealt with injury problems in the past. After a 500-yard freshman campaign with the Hurricanes, he tore the ACL in his left knee in spring 2002. He returned in 2003 and played four games, but he went on to tear his right ACL that year. Gore worked hard and managed to recover well from that injury, gaining nearly 1,000 yards in 2004, but struggled somewhat with a groin problem in his first NFL season in '05. Most questions about Gore's durability were put to rest after his phenomenal '06 season, but any time a running back has dealt with knee and groin problems in the past, there is definitely concern.Frankly, the 49ers cannot afford to lose Gore for the simple fact that they aren't adequately prepared to replace him. No other returning RB on the roster has ever posted more than 100 carries or 400 yards in a single season, and rookie sixth-round pick Steelers 43 Polamalu jersey
Thomas Clayton gained fewer yards in his career at Kansas State than Gore did in '06 alone. For the 49ers to become a playoff contender this year, Gore needs to stay healthy. If they lose him, all hope of even remaining competitive fades.Got a bone to pick with a newspaper columnist, talk show personality or television analyst? E-mail us at mediawatch . Jacksonville Jaguars Ty Law New England Patriots: NFL News

Vagabond cornerback Ty Law is scheduled to workout with the Jacksonville Jaguars, this according to ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli. The former New England Patriots standout has been linked with a half dozen teams or so thus far, but has failed to catch on as of yet. Among the teams that Ty Law has visited are the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions. Part of the problem with Law is that he not been fully cleared to make football movements on his surgically repaired foot, yet he is asking for the type of money that is usually reserved for top players at his position. Vikings Brett Favre jersey
Doctors have mentioned that the nature of his injury requires a relatively long and drawn out rehabilitation. He can run, but that's about it.In addition, Ty Law is no young buck. The 11 year veteran turned 31 earlier this year. Law solidified his position as one of the NFL's top cornerbacks two years ago, but his injury and age make it difficult to justify paying him top dollar. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed a tender contract with returner David Allen and released defensive end Lionel Barnes. Allen joined the Jags in 2003 and has seen extensive duty returning punts and kicks. Officially listed as a running back, Allen has returned 42 punts for 468 yards (11.1 average) and 52 kickoffs for 1041 yards (20.0 avg) in 2 seasons as a professional out of Kansas State. The 6'5", 260 lbs. Barnes played 3 games for the team before going on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. The University of Louisiana-Monroe product began his playing career with the St. Louis Rams in 1999, then joined the (2000-2002), before landing in Jacksonville in 2003. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed cornerback Kenny Wright to a 1 year contract. The 6'1", 207 lbs. free agent played all 16 games with the Houston Texans in 2004, recording 13 tackles and 1 sack. Free agent acquisition Terry Cousin and backup Kiwaukee Thomas, and Wright are all vying for a starting CB position in 2005. The Northwestern State-Louisiana product has played for the Minnesota Vikings (1999-2001) and Houston Texans (2002-2004) in his 6 year career. The 27 year-old Wright has 253 tackles, 3 sacks, 4 INTs, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 recovery of an opponent's fumble in 94 games. The Jacksonville Jaguars opened their mandatory mini-camp without safety Donovin Darius. The player is disgruntled about receiving the dreaded franchise player tag the last 3 years. Darius also complained about the designation prior to last season. Coach Jack Del Rion granted the safety permission to sit out mini-camp. This year, the coach requested Darius to 4 Brett Favre White jersey
practice with team. He will be fined for each session missed.Darius did sign the franchise tender which guarantees him a $4.97 million paycheck for this season. Nevertheless, he did seek out trades to the Minnesota Vikings and the Miami Dolphins. The Jaguars have not received any interest from teams willing to acquire Darius. Despite missing every practice session this offseason, coach Del Rio expects Darius to report for training camp in early Jul

Jacksonville Jaguars Byron Leftwich Jimmy Smith

The Jacksonville Jaguars stepped it up today as a team, defeating the Seattle Seahawks 26-14. Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich may have gotten sacked three times, but he finished with 17 of 31 passes completed. By the end of the game, he tallied 252 yards and two touchdowns. 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
The Jaguars' veteran wide receiver, Jimmy Smith, proved he still has what it takes. He caught 7 passes for 130 yards resulting in two touchdowns. The 36 year old Pro Bowler eased the minds of many skeptics with the way he played today.Returning from a knee injury, Jaguars' running back Fred Taylor also played a key role in winning the game as he ran for 76 yards. Taylor broke tackles and took some hard hits, all while wearing a steel brace on his left knee.Just like the rest of the team, Jacksonville's defense returned to form. They nabbed three interceptions in the game and forced a fumble. Special teams also forced a fumble on the opening play of the game.Overall, Jacksonville Jaguars' head coach Jack Del Rio wasn't completely satisfied with the results of today's game. With his team plus five on the turnover ratio, he felt like they should have had a bigger lead at the end of the game. He wants his team to be stronger in the red zone, and score more touchdowns. Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren doesn't think today was his team's day. He feels turnovers played a big factor in the game. Two costly turnovers in the last quarter helped lock in the win for the Jaguars, and left the Seahawks with no hope of coming back. Linebacker Daryl Smith intercepted a pass that set up a 29 yard field goal for the Jaguars, then linebacker Akin Avodele sacked Matt Hallelbeck causing him to fumble. This led to another field goal for the Jaguars that put the game out of reach. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed veteran defensive tackle Tony Williams. The free agent acquisition will be used to backup Pro Bowl DTs John Henderson and Marcus Stroud. The 6'2", 296 lbs. Williams played in 6 games for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2004 before missing the rest of Steelers 10 Santonio Holmes jersey
the season with a broken ankle on a cut block by Denver Broncos RT George Foster. He finished the year with 16 tackles. The former Memphis Tiger had played for the Minnesota Vikings (1997-2000), before joining the Bengals in 2001. Over 8 seasons, he has totalled 260 tackles, 22 sacks, 3 deflected passes, 1 forced fumble, and 5 fumble recoveries.
