Oakland Raiders Are an Object Lesson for Some College Students, So Please Win!

Reverse the trend and win the game on Dec. 5, 2010.The game is a test! Two teams are the center of my love for sports: the Oakland Raiders and the college team, Texas Southern University (TSU)Tigers. Both teams were struggling in 2007.
Some subjects are considered tough. Mathematics is one ofnfl jerseys
those subjects. Since 2007, a Texas professor has been designing lessons using NFL data and some college football data to illustrate the power and utility of mathematics in the real world.
In 2008, both targeted teams struggled. Again, in 2009, both teams struggled.
In 2010, the future looked very bright for the Oakland Raiders. Even the media saw a difference in the way the new players were selected. Things were looking up.
Suddenly the researcher who is a two-year college professor saw an opportunity to teach an object lesson. The lesson was that a man can change, a team can change and students can change.
On the one hand, Texas Southern University looked like they were headed to a championship. That's right, and they are on their way in just a few more days. A college team did change. It's been 42 years since TSU has come close to a championship.
Something happened to the beloved NFL team, the Oakland Raiders. Suddenly the pattern of losses returned, and it was difficult to explain to the students. After all, the object lesson was that a team can change and go from losing to winning in a consistent pattern.
It looked like the pattern was deterministic, but lately it seems more like "chaos."
The data does not lie. The discussions are becoming more complicated. The team that showed so much potential and promise is slipping back to its old ways, losing back-to-back games rather than having back-to-back wins.
How does the professor face those students, most of whom rather cheer for a Texas team in the first place?
Today, one of the students who loves the Oakland Raiders proudly wore his Raider gear. He hopes for a victory on Sunday, Dec. 5. Sometimes this young man comes to class with a skateboard, his black and silver and a good attitude. He let the professor know that he is concerned about Sunday. He is uncertain, and he has looked at the data to try to conjecture what will be the outcome.
From a mathematic point of football jerseys
view, there is noise, or perturbation, in the Oakland Raiders' system. Where is the noise or vibration (or error) coming from? Were the activities and conversations of bye week so powerful that they dismantled an aggressive hard-hitting team of Oakland Raiders?
Now, what does the professor tell the students about determination, persistence and getting ready for the final exam? A parallel would be to ask what are the coaches telling the Oakland Raiders on this day to reverse the trend of the past two games? The Oakland Raiders must not fail the "final exam."
Maybe if this team knew how many young people were encouraged and became hopeful after watching those three consecutive wins, they (the Oakland Raiders) will refuse to be defeated.
Sometimes when you fight a battle for others, you become more fierce and determined to have a victory.
Oakland Raiders, fight hard to win. Do it for some young people who have been learning to study the patterns and trends of the team's performance since 1960.
Finally, the object lesson during the fall semester will be so much more effective if you, the Oakland Raiders, upset the media and the onlookers. Show the young people that a team can change.
Show young people that preparation, nfl throwback jerseys
persistence and a powerful focus on winning can indeed make a difference in academics and sports, even in professional sports.
Go Oakland Raiders! Do not fail the "final exam."

Twenty-five seasons have passed since the Steelers last won a Super Bowl

Twenty-five seasons have passed since the Steelers last won a Super Bowl, and a new generation hungers for a championship of its own in Pittsburgh. After coming close so often over the past decade, the president of the franchise believes it's time to add another Vince Lombardi trophy to the club's aging quartet."I think for the people who have been around for awhile now, I think we all feel like it's time," Art Rooney says. "We've been close and we have to take that last step."The Steelers were the surprise of the NFL last season when, behind a rookie quarterback, they became the first team from the AFC to go 15-1. But they also became only the second 15-1 NFL team not to reach the Super Bowl when they lost the AFC Championship game at home for the fourth 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
time in 11 years.Nothing less than a Super Bowl will be good enough this season, even though they suffered losses in free agency. Coach Bill Cowher worries that it will be difficult to match last year's determination by a team embarrassed with its 6-10 record in 2003."Going into this season there will be talk of this football team being one of the preseason favorites," Cowher says. "Those are the things you have to fight. Complacency can create a lot of disappointment if you are not careful. I think that is the challenge we have."QuarterbacksNo rookie quarterback ever produced a better record in one season than Ben Roethlisberger did when he started 13 games and won them all in the regular season. He broke Dan Marino's 21-year-old rookie records for pass completion percentage and passer rating. He earned AFC Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, and his No. 7 jersey was the league's hottest seller.Great. Now, can he do it again or will the sophomore jinx bite him? His performance fell off badly in two playoff games, but his coaches may put even more on his shoulders this season, something Roethlisberger wants."I think it would be great if we can open up the offense a little more," he says.Tommy Maddox, who opened the door for Roethlisberger when he was hurt in the second game last season, is more than capable as the backup. Maddox has shown he can guide an offense into the playoffs and is willing to work with the young phenom. Charlie Batch will compete with Brian St. Pierre for No. 3.Running BacksThe Steelers should be strong in the backfield provided Jerome Bettis and Duce Staley hold up. Bettis, 33, considered retirement, but after leading the team with 941 yards rushing he decided in the spring to give it one more try to reach his first Super Bowl.Staley will open the season again as the starter. He was on his way to his best season with 707 yards after seven games before a hamstring injury held him to just 41 carries the rest of the regular season. Provided he stays healthy, Staley will get the bulk of the carries and Bettis will be used at the goal line. "My job is backing Duce up," Bettis says. "If he goes down, I have to be ready to go. You have to prepare yourself every season as if you'll take all the carries."Two other capable backs wait in the wings. Verron Haynes plays on third downs but has been limited by injuries in his career. Speedy Willie Parker gained 102 yards at Buffalo and has the look of 36 Bettis White Jersey
a future star. Dan Kreider is one of the better blocking fullbacks in the
Colts jersey
league.ReceiversThe Plaxico Burress Era ended when the enigmatic wideout departed for the Giants in free agency. Antwaan Randle El and free-agent pickup Cedrick Wilson will get a chance to replace Burress. One of them will play in the slot.Wilson was the team's only real free agent signing after he spent his four previous seasons in relative obscurity in San Francisco. The Steelers believe they have a player on the rise.Randle El or Wilson will present smaller targets for Roethlisberger, but they will be faster ones and, they hope, more dependable than Burress. Among the most dependable in the league at flanker is Hines Ward, a four-time Pro Bowler who could finish as the Steelers' leading receiver of all time. His 80 receptions for 1,004 yards came on a team that ran the ball over 60 percent of the time. The Steelers have not been strong at tight end since Mark Bruener's heyday, but that could change since they drafted Virginia's 6-foot-5, 256-pound Heath Miller in the first round.Offensive LinemenA team that loses two starters on the line and adds none can be headed for trouble. But the loss of right tackle Oliver Ross and right guard Keydrick Vincent has not bothered the Steelers, except for their loss of depth. For one, Kendall Simmons returns at right guard after a torn ACL in training camp ended his 2004 season before it began. He started his first two seasons before the injury. Max Starks, a third-round draft choice last year, moves in at right tackle. He's the team's biggest player at 6-foot-7, 337 and performed well as an extra tackle in short-yardage as a rookie.Guard Alan Faneca and center Jeff Hartings both were first-team All-Pro, and left tackle Marvel Smith made his first Pro Bowl. The Steelers' depth is not strong. Chukky Okobi is a good backup center, and Barrett Brooks is a veteran who can play guard or tackle on either side.Defensive LinemenThe Steelers may have the best defensive line in the NFL -- for a 3-4 team. It's a big reason they were No. 1 against the rush and it's also the deepest area on their team. Two out of three are Pro Bowlers: Left end Aaron Smith made it last year and nosetackle Casey Hampton made it in 2003. Hampton missed the final 10 games (and the playoffs) of the '04 season with a knee injury but will return to start. Chris Hoke stepped in for Hampton in the second half of the season and proved more than capable.Right end Kimo von Oelhoffen shows no signs of slowing down at 34, and if he does, backup ends Travis Kirschke and Brett Keisel are regarded highly by the coaching staff. LinebackersTwo of the four starters made the Pro Bowl last season, team MVP James Farrior and Joey Porter. Larry Foote played so well next to Farrior that the team let Kendrell Bell walk as a free agent, re-signed Foote and gave the job to him. Clark Haggans returns as the starter on the outside opposite Porter. But there's not much depth. Clint Kriewaldt serves as the No. 1 backup inside, and James Harrison grabbed the top backup job on the outside away from Alonzo Jackson. The No. 2 pick in 2003, Jackson has been a disappointment, and his roster spot will be on the line this year. The Steelers hoped he could provide relief for Haggans and Porter on the pass rush because those two play every down.Defensive BacksThe Steelers would like to upgrade a secondary they changed radically last season. They hope second-year corner Ricardo Colclough can challenge Willie Williams, 34, for the starting job. Williams took over for an injured Chad Scott at midseason and played so well Scott was released. Deshea Townsend, 30, returns on the right side with Ike Taylor behind him. Troy Polamalu proved to be a delight in his first year as the starting strong safety, and his strong season was rewarded with an invitation to the Pro Bowl. Chris Hope gave the team more speed at free safety but his coaches wish he also made more big plays and interceptions.SpecialistsWith punter Chris Gardocki and kicker Jeff Reed, the Steelers are in good hands with their feet. Reed signed a long-term contract and enters the 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
season with a string of 17 successful field goal tries, two short of Gary Anderson's team record. He has a strong, accurate leg. Gardocki has been dependable with an NFL-record 1,045 punts without a block over 14 seasons. Final AnalysisTheir losses in free agency and their rough schedule will preclude the Steelers from matching last season's 15-1 record. Teams just don't lose 40 percent of their offensive line, a dynamic receiver and a player such as Bell and find improvement. Yet, they have capable replacements and, instead of a sophomore jinx, perhaps Roethlisberger will perform better than he did as a rookie. Their passing game was efficient, and if they successfully open it up, the whole offense should improve.

San Francisco 49ers Alex Smith

The San Francisco 49ers ended their season on a positive note this past Sunday against the Houston Texans, as rookie quarterback Alex Smith gave himself a tremendous confidence booster in the final game. With 18 seconds left in the first half, on a third-and-5 from the Houston 14-yard line, Smith rolled to his right and spotted Brandon Lloyd in the corner of the end zone. The play helped the 49ers end their year on a positive note with a win, and should give Smith some momentum heading into the off season. Smith apparently saved the best for 6 Sanchez Purple AFL50th jersey
last as he had his finest game of the season. The throw to Lloyd was the very first touchdown pass of his career. This time last year Smith was heading into his final game with the Utah Utes in the Fiesta Bowl. In that game he showed many that he was a great quarterback with a lot of abilities. The 49ers believed he was talented as well, as they took him No.1 overall. Even though he had a lot of promise in his final year at Utah, he still was depicted as a system quarterback who benefited from Urban Meyer's innovative offense. Once he started his rookie season with San Francisco Smith found it hard to adjust to the pro game. In his rookie season he was shuffled around more than a jack in a deck of cards, due to his inconsistent play, and the team's inability to protect quarterbacks. Smith headed into the preseason as the starter, then was held back a while to give Tim Rattay the starting job. Then once Rattay didn't work out, they decided that it was time for Smith to go in and take his lumps. Smith endured the lumps and then some, as he threw 11 interceptions in nine games played and suffered the fate of being a young quarterback on a team with a very bad offensive line. In 2005 Smith was sacked 29 times and faced tremendous amounts of pressure as a result of that struggling offensive line. The pressure at times was too much for Smith to take as he made mistakes and didn't break 100 yards passing in a game until December 4th against the Cardinals. Smith did have a tough rookie year, and must improve when his sophomore season with the 49ers begins in August. The Niners passing game finished dead last in the NFL after their 16 game schedule in 2005, which indicates the necessity for improvement from their No.1 draft pick. Smith didn't play up to expectations, but he shouldn't take the entire load of blame head on. The offensive line and other components of the offense need to do a better job protecting the signal caller. Without that protection no quarterback 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
could survive, not even Joe Montana or Steve Young. The role of the quarterback in the San Francisco offense has to change quickly, which means the weight on Smith's shoulders is tremendous. He has to elevate his game, and should train in this offseason to be better prepared to endure the tests of the NFL schedule. San Francisco has a long way to go, but ending the year on a positive note should give Smith and the 49ers faithful a silver lining on this disappointing season.

San Francisco 49ers "Running Backs depth lacking"

If there's one area offensively where the San Francisco 49ers seem to be set, it's at the running back position. The Niners were ranked sixth in the NFL in rushing last season, netting 135.8 yards per game on the ground. Furthermore, starting tailback Frank Gore set a new franchise record Steelers 43 Polamalu jersey
and led the NFC with 1,695 yards in 2006, averaging 105.9 a game and 5.4 per carry in the process. Clearly, then, San Francisco fans have no cause for concern when it comes to the running game, right?Well, with his performance last season, Gore emerged as one of the league's top tailbacks. In his second year in the league, the former Miami Hurricane proved that trading Kevan Barlow before last season was the right move to make. He ran for 87 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the 49ers' season-opening loss to Arizona and followed that up with the first of nine 100-plus-yard efforts, gaining 127 in a Week 2 victory over the Rams. In addition, Gore finished the season with 2,180 yards from scrimmage and led the team with 61 receptions, establishing himself not only as an exceptional runner but as a solid all-purpose threat, too.It is behind Gore that things start to look a little dicey. To say that the Niners lack depth at running back is an understatement. Behind Gore and quarterback Alex Smith, the team's third-leading rusher from 2006 was rookie Michael Robinson, a converted QB out of Penn State. Robinson is a tremendous athlete and has potential, as illustrated by his two-touchdown performance against the Eagles last September; however, he had just 38 carries as a rookie and remains both unproven and untested. The problem for the Niners is, Gore has dealt with injury problems in the past. After a 500-yard freshman campaign with the Hurricanes, he tore the ACL in his left knee in spring 2002. He returned in 2003 and played four games, but he went on to tear his right ACL that year. Gore worked hard and managed to recover well from that injury, gaining nearly 1,000 yards in 2004, but struggled somewhat with a groin problem in his first NFL season in '05. Most questions about Gore's durability were put to rest after his phenomenal '06 season, but any time a running back has dealt with knee and groin problems in the past, there is definitely concern.Frankly, the 49ers cannot afford to lose Gore for the simple fact that they aren't adequately prepared to replace him. No other returning RB on the roster has ever posted more than 100 carries or 400 yards in a single season, and rookie sixth-round pick Steelers 43 Polamalu jersey
Thomas Clayton gained fewer yards in his career at Kansas State than Gore did in '06 alone. For the 49ers to become a playoff contender this year, Gore needs to stay healthy. If they lose him, all hope of even remaining competitive fades.Got a bone to pick with a newspaper columnist, talk show personality or television analyst? E-mail us at mediawatch . Jacksonville Jaguars Ty Law New England Patriots: NFL News

Vagabond cornerback Ty Law is scheduled to workout with the Jacksonville Jaguars, this according to ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli. The former New England Patriots standout has been linked with a half dozen teams or so thus far, but has failed to catch on as of yet. Among the teams that Ty Law has visited are the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions. Part of the problem with Law is that he not been fully cleared to make football movements on his surgically repaired foot, yet he is asking for the type of money that is usually reserved for top players at his position. Vikings Brett Favre jersey
Doctors have mentioned that the nature of his injury requires a relatively long and drawn out rehabilitation. He can run, but that's about it.In addition, Ty Law is no young buck. The 11 year veteran turned 31 earlier this year. Law solidified his position as one of the NFL's top cornerbacks two years ago, but his injury and age make it difficult to justify paying him top dollar. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed a tender contract with returner David Allen and released defensive end Lionel Barnes. Allen joined the Jags in 2003 and has seen extensive duty returning punts and kicks. Officially listed as a running back, Allen has returned 42 punts for 468 yards (11.1 average) and 52 kickoffs for 1041 yards (20.0 avg) in 2 seasons as a professional out of Kansas State. The 6'5", 260 lbs. Barnes played 3 games for the team before going on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. The University of Louisiana-Monroe product began his playing career with the St. Louis Rams in 1999, then joined the (2000-2002), before landing in Jacksonville in 2003. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed cornerback Kenny Wright to a 1 year contract. The 6'1", 207 lbs. free agent played all 16 games with the Houston Texans in 2004, recording 13 tackles and 1 sack. Free agent acquisition Terry Cousin and backup Kiwaukee Thomas, and Wright are all vying for a starting CB position in 2005. The Northwestern State-Louisiana product has played for the Minnesota Vikings (1999-2001) and Houston Texans (2002-2004) in his 6 year career. The 27 year-old Wright has 253 tackles, 3 sacks, 4 INTs, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 recovery of an opponent's fumble in 94 games. The Jacksonville Jaguars opened their mandatory mini-camp without safety Donovin Darius. The player is disgruntled about receiving the dreaded franchise player tag the last 3 years. Darius also complained about the designation prior to last season. Coach Jack Del Rion granted the safety permission to sit out mini-camp. This year, the coach requested Darius to 4 Brett Favre White jersey
practice with team. He will be fined for each session missed.Darius did sign the franchise tender which guarantees him a $4.97 million paycheck for this season. Nevertheless, he did seek out trades to the Minnesota Vikings and the Miami Dolphins. The Jaguars have not received any interest from teams willing to acquire Darius. Despite missing every practice session this offseason, coach Del Rio expects Darius to report for training camp in early Jul

Jacksonville Jaguars Byron Leftwich Jimmy Smith

The Jacksonville Jaguars stepped it up today as a team, defeating the Seattle Seahawks 26-14. Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich may have gotten sacked three times, but he finished with 17 of 31 passes completed. By the end of the game, he tallied 252 yards and two touchdowns. 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
The Jaguars' veteran wide receiver, Jimmy Smith, proved he still has what it takes. He caught 7 passes for 130 yards resulting in two touchdowns. The 36 year old Pro Bowler eased the minds of many skeptics with the way he played today.Returning from a knee injury, Jaguars' running back Fred Taylor also played a key role in winning the game as he ran for 76 yards. Taylor broke tackles and took some hard hits, all while wearing a steel brace on his left knee.Just like the rest of the team, Jacksonville's defense returned to form. They nabbed three interceptions in the game and forced a fumble. Special teams also forced a fumble on the opening play of the game.Overall, Jacksonville Jaguars' head coach Jack Del Rio wasn't completely satisfied with the results of today's game. With his team plus five on the turnover ratio, he felt like they should have had a bigger lead at the end of the game. He wants his team to be stronger in the red zone, and score more touchdowns. Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren doesn't think today was his team's day. He feels turnovers played a big factor in the game. Two costly turnovers in the last quarter helped lock in the win for the Jaguars, and left the Seahawks with no hope of coming back. Linebacker Daryl Smith intercepted a pass that set up a 29 yard field goal for the Jaguars, then linebacker Akin Avodele sacked Matt Hallelbeck causing him to fumble. This led to another field goal for the Jaguars that put the game out of reach. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed veteran defensive tackle Tony Williams. The free agent acquisition will be used to backup Pro Bowl DTs John Henderson and Marcus Stroud. The 6'2", 296 lbs. Williams played in 6 games for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2004 before missing the rest of Steelers 10 Santonio Holmes jersey
the season with a broken ankle on a cut block by Denver Broncos RT George Foster. He finished the year with 16 tackles. The former Memphis Tiger had played for the Minnesota Vikings (1997-2000), before joining the Bengals in 2001. Over 8 seasons, he has totalled 260 tackles, 22 sacks, 3 deflected passes, 1 forced fumble, and 5 fumble recoveries.
